Level 1The Counter Version
First Focal Plane (FFP)
When you zoom in, the crosshair grows with the picture. The spacing in the reticle always stays true, so holdovers and wind holds work at any magnification.
Second Focal Plane (SFP)
When you zoom in, the picture gets bigger but the crosshair looks the same. Easier to see on low power, finer on high power, but the measuring marks are only accurate at one magnification setting.
FFP is for people who want the reticle to always mean the same thing. SFP is for people who want the reticle to always look the same.
Level 2One Step Deeper
FFP: The reticle changes apparent size as you change magnification. It looks smaller on low power and larger on high power, while the hold marks stay mathematically correct at any magnification.
SFP: The reticle looks the same size to your eye at every power. The target image grows and shrinks, but the reticle appears unchanged, so hold marks are only correct at one specific magnification, usually the highest power unless the manufacturer says otherwise.
Level 3The Technical Version
In an FFP scope, the reticle sits in front of the magnification assembly, so the reticle scales with the target image as magnification changes. Because both enlarge together, subtensions stay constant in angular value: 1 mil is still 1 mil, 2 MOA is still 2 MOA, at any power. This is why FFP is strongly associated with holding for elevation and wind at variable magnification.
In an SFP scope, the reticle sits behind the magnification assembly, so the target image changes size but the reticle does not appear to. Subtensions only line up correctly at one chosen power. That makes SFP clean and visually attractive for simple aiming, but less flexible for precision holding unless the shooter stays on the calibrated magnification.
Where People Get Confused
Common myths you will hear at the counter:
"FFP is always better." Not true. It is better for versatility in using the reticle.
"SFP is old school." Not true. It is often better for simplicity and visual comfort.
"Serious shooters must use FFP." Not true. Benchrest and F-Class shooters are as serious as it gets, and many run SFP.
The right question is never "Which is best?" It is "How is this person actually going to shoot?"

What to point out to the customer:
On the FFP side, the MOAR hash marks shrink and grow with the target. Every mark is always worth exactly 1 MOA, at 4x or 32x.
On the SFP side, the reticle never changes. Notice how many hash marks span the plate at 32x versus 16x. Same target, completely different reading.
This is also why some shooters dislike FFP on low power: drag the slider down to 4x and watch the reticle get very fine. For a hunter who wants a bold aiming point at low power, that is a real consideration.

Sell It
Match the plane to the shooter, not the spec sheet. One qualifying question does most of the work.

PRS / practical precision: FFP wins more often. Multiple targets, varied distances, time pressure, and shooters who are not always at max power. Holds must stay true everywhere.
NRL Hunter: Lean FFP for the shooter who uses the reticle aggressively across field-style stages. SFP fits the hunter-minded shooter who dials or takes simpler shots.
Benchrest / F-Class: SFP is commonly favored. Known magnification, controlled position, and a stable, extremely precise aiming point matter more than hold flexibility.
Traditional hunting: SFP is often the easiest recommendation: bold, intuitive, visually clean. But western hunters taking variable-distance shots where they hold instead of dial should give FFP real consideration.
Tactical / DMR / gas gun crossover: FFP makes sense for mixed distances and fast holds without dialing everything.
Beginner Framework
Hunting rifle = usually SFP
Crossover rifle = depends, ask the qualifying question
Match rifle = usually FFP
One-sentence close: FFP gives you a smarter reticle. SFP gives you an easier-looking reticle.
SFP Math
Only bring this up if the customer is experienced, asks specifically, or wants to run SFP off its calibrated power. Otherwise, do not overwhelm them.
True Value = Marked Value × ( Calibration Mag ÷ Current Mag )
Shortcut rule: Cut magnification in half, double your holds. Double magnification, halve your holds.
