Light Transmission

The spec customers quote and the number that means less than they think. This module is about winning the moment they look through the glass. Work the tabs left to right, then take the knowledge check.

Three levels of the same idea. Start at the counter version. Go deeper as you get comfortable.

Level 1The Counter Version

Light transmission is the percentage of available light that passes through the scope and reaches your eye. More transmission, all else being equal, means a brighter image. Less transmission means less light reaches your eye. But here is the counter truth: brightness alone does not tell you what you can actually see, especially in low light.

The line that works every time:

"It's not just brightness. It's what you can actually see in low light."

Brightness helps you see light. Contrast helps you see detail.

Level 2One Step Deeper: Where the Light Goes

Light transmission is one part of how a scope manages light. Overall image quality also depends on glass quality, anti-reflective lens coatings, optical design, the number of air-to-glass surfaces, and control of internal reflections and stray light. Every lens surface reflects away a small amount of light. A scope has many surfaces, so those small losses compound. Better coatings mean less loss at each surface, which is why coating quality quietly matters more than most customers ever hear.

Level 3The Technical Version: The Percentage Problem

There is no universal industry standard for measuring light transmission. Brands may measure different wavelengths (color ranges), different points in the scope, and best-case versus average performance. So "92% vs 95%" often does not mean what customers think it does. Two honest manufacturers can publish numbers that cannot be compared to each other.

What matters more than the number: low-light visibility (dawn and dusk performance), contrast (separating the target from the background), color accuracy, and glare control. A scope can post a high transmission figure and still look worse in real use, because a flat, washed-out image shows you light without showing you detail.

Where People Get Confused

Common myths you will hear at the counter:

  • "95% beats 92%, so it is 3% better in the field." Not necessarily. With no shared standard, the two numbers may not even measure the same thing.
  • "Brighter is all that matters in low light." Brightness matters, and it is not the whole job: at last light you need enough light and the contrast to separate the animal from its surroundings.
  • "More lenses means a fancier, better scope." Every added surface is a place to lose light. Design quality, not lens count, wins.
  • "The other brand lies about their numbers." Never say this, and do not believe it either. The honest framing: there is no standard, so the numbers mislead on their own. The glass settles it, not the sheet.

What to point out to the customer:

  • Start at midday: both scopes look great. Spec sheets are written for this moment.
  • Drag toward last light. Both scopes darken, as they should. Watch what Scope A gives up first: color separation, shadow detail, and the edge definition that holds the buck apart from the field.
  • Scope B ends up just as dark, even a touch darker, and keeps the local contrast: deeper blacks that still hold detail, and a buck you can still distinguish from the grass and the treeline.
  • Then run the real version at the counter: dim corner of the store, two scopes at the same magnification, one question: "Which one lets you see more detail in the shadows?" Do not tell. Let their eyes decide.

Sell It

The goal is not to win the spec sheet. It is to win the moment the customer looks through the glass.

Compare Without Trashing Other Brands

Never say
  • "They lie about their numbers."
  • "Ours is higher."

Trash talk reads as insecurity, and a customer who owns the other brand just got insulted.

Say instead
  • "There's no industry standard for measuring light transmission, so numbers can be misleading."
  • "We focus on real-world performance: contrast, clarity, and low-light visibility."
  • "The best way to compare is to look through them side by side."

That framing keeps the counter honest, professional, and credible, and it quietly moves the contest onto ground where great glass wins: the customer's own eyes.

The Counter Demo That Closes

  • 1. Take the customer near a darker area of the store, or find a dim corner.
  • 2. Pick something with a color similar to its background: a brown box against wood paneling beats a white sign.
  • 3. Set both scopes to the same magnification before comparing, so magnification and exit-pupil differences do not contaminate the test.
  • 4. Have them compare through multiple scopes, yours included.
  • 5. Ask the one question: "Which one lets you separate that object from the background easier?" Then say nothing else.

Don't tell. Let them decide. A conclusion the customer reaches with their own eyes cannot be argued away by a spec sheet, a forum thread, or a buddy at the range.

Spec Selling vs Performance Selling

Most reps say

"This one is brighter."

The better reps say

"This one lets you see more."

That one-word shift, from brightness to seeing, is the whole coaching note. Reps who lean on percentages lose credibility the moment a sharp customer asks how the number was measured. Reps who lean on real-world visibility gain trust, because everything they claim can be verified through the glass in the next thirty seconds.

One-sentence close: "Both scopes may look bright. This one lets you separate the deer from the trees. That's contrast."

Spec vs Real

Why the percentages cannot be compared, where the light actually goes, and the four qualities to sell instead.

The Percentage Problem

There is no universal standard, so published transmission figures can differ in:

  • Wavelengths measured: a scope tuned to score well in one color range can post a big number that says little about the full picture your eye sees.
  • Where in the scope it is measured: different measurement points produce different figures for the same optic.
  • Best-case vs average: a peak reading and a real-world average are very different claims wearing the same percent sign.

Conclusion for the counter: two brands' percentages are usually not comparable numbers. Treat them as marketing, not measurement.

Where the Light Goes

Total Transmission = (per-surface transmission) ^ (number of surfaces)

Illustration, not a brand spec. Quality multi-coatings pass roughly 99.5% or better per surface; bare uncoated glass loses several percent at every surface. Run 96% per surface through the same lens count and watch what happens.

Small losses, many surfaces. Coatings are where transmission is won, one surface at a time.

What to Sell Instead of the Number

  • Low-light visibility: dawn and dusk performance, the hours that actually decide hunts.
  • Contrast: the ability to separate the target from brush and shadow. Edges, not glow.
  • Color accuracy: true-to-life color keeps a tan animal from vanishing into tan ground.
  • Glare control: a high number means nothing if a low sun washes the whole image out.

  • Seeing "something" without identifying it

  • Defined edges: animal vs background
  • Shadows that still hold detail
  • Picking out the target faster and with confidence
