MOA vs MRAD

Two measurement systems, one job, and the question every counter gets weekly: which one should I buy? Work the tabs left to right, then take the knowledge check.

Three levels of the same idea. Start at the counter version. Go deeper as you get comfortable.

Level 1The Counter Version

MOA and MRAD (MIL) are two different ways to measure adjustments and holdovers in a rifle scope. Both do the same job. They just use different units.

The analogy that works every time:

"Think of MOA and MRAD like inches vs centimeters. They both measure the same thing. You just pick one system and stick with it."

Neither one is better. Consistency matters more than system.

Level 3The Technical Version

MRAD: 1 milliradian is 1/1000 of a radian, a pure angular measurement that scales cleanly with distance: 1 MIL spans 3.6 inches at 100 yards, 18 inches at 500, and 36 inches at 1000. That clean scaling is why MIL dominates modern precision shooting: holds communicate fast ("hold 1.2"), it pairs cleanly with ranging, and it works well for team shooting and spotting.

MOA: 1 minute of angle is 1/60 of a degree, which works out to 1.047 inches at 100 yards, usually simplified to 1 inch. It is every bit as capable; the math is just less tidy.

Precision per click: at 100 yards, 0.1 MIL ≈ 0.36 inches and 1/4 MOA ≈ 0.26 inches. So MOA is slightly finer per click, and MIL is simpler to use. That is the honest whole tradeoff.

Where People Get Confused

The mistakes to train out of your team:

  • Saying one is "better." They do the same job. The right answer depends on the shooter, not the system.
  • Over-explaining the math. Most customers need the inches-vs-centimeters line and nothing more.
  • Mixing systems. A MIL reticle with MOA turrets (or the reverse) forces conversion on every shot. Never sell it, never set it up.
  • Converting on the fly. Nobody should be multiplying by 3.44 under time pressure. Pick a language and speak it.

See It

Two drills. First, watch both units grow with distance against the same steel. Then dial the same miss out in each language and feel the difference.

Drill 2 · Correct the miss:

  • Your shot landed low at 300 yards. Pick a turret language, then click Up until the impact is centered.
  • Fix the same miss in both systems: switch languages any time (it restarts the correction) and compare the click counts and the dial readings.
  • Neither system misses. One just reads in tenths and the other in quarters.

What to point out to the customer:

  • In Drill 1, both brackets grow together as the distance runs out. Angles do not change, inches do. The ratio is locked: 1 MIL is always about 3.4 MOA.
  • At 500 yards, 1 MIL spans the full 18 inch plate. That is why MIL communicates so fast in the field: holds and misses come in small clean numbers.
  • In Drill 2, both languages center the same miss. MOA takes more clicks and each one is finer; MIL gets there in tidy tenths. Neither wins. Consistency wins.
  • The counter version of all of it: inches vs centimeters. Pick one, stick with it, match the turret and the reticle.

Sell It

This conversation is won by keeping it simple. The script is short, the decision rule is shorter, and the golden rule is non-negotiable.

The qualifying question: "Do you already have a scope system you're used to?"
If YES

Match it. A shooter invested in MOA rifles, MOA scopes, and MOA habits should stay MOA. Switching languages mid-collection buys confusion, not capability.

If NO

Recommend MIL. Simpler math, cleaner communication, and the modern default for precision shooting. A new shooter learns holds faster in tenths.

The Perfect Script

When a customer asks "What's the difference?" say this and stop:

"They both do the same thing. It's just two different measurement systems. Most people today go with MIL because the math is simpler, but if you're used to MOA, it works just as well."

Stop there unless they want more. The fastest way to lose this sale is a radian lecture nobody asked for. Depth is available in this module when the customer pulls for it; never push it.

When to Recommend Each

Recommend MRAD when they are...
  • A new shooter with no existing system
  • Shooting PRS, tactical, or a gas gun
  • Asking for simple math
  • Learning to hold with the reticle
Recommend MOA when they are...
  • A hunter already comfortable in MOA
  • An older or traditional shooter
  • Invested in MOA rifles and scopes
  • Drawn to slightly finer adjustments

The Golden Rule

"Match your turret and reticle system, and don't mix them." MIL/MIL or MOA/MOA only. A mixed setup forces a conversion on every single shot, and it is the one configuration mistake a counter should never let out the door. The Definitions

MRAD (Milliradian)

  • MOA is slightly finer per click. MIL is simpler to use. That is the entire honest tradeoff, and either one is more precise than the shooter behind it.

Real-World Holdover

A target needs a 3.6 inch correction at 100 yards. In MIL that is a clean 1.0 MIL. In MOA it is roughly 3.5 MOA. Same correction, two dialects; the MIL version is just easier to say over a spotting scope.

Unit accepts MIL or MOA. And remember the training point: this converter exists so your team understands the relationship, not so anyone converts on the fly at a match.
